Women in Internal Medicine Group
Women in medicine have historically faced and continue to face unique challenges in achieving equity throughout their careers. These challenges include disparities in compensation, gender and age bias, unequal expectations surrounding caregiving and child-rearing, barriers to promotion and leadership, and underrepresentation in academic medicine. These important issues were highlighted during a previous Department of Medicine Grand Rounds presented by Julie Silver, MD, associate professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School.
At UMass Chan, we are committed to fostering an inclusive culture that supports and advances women in academic medicine. Strong female leadership is evident throughout our Internal Medicine Residency Program, the Department of Medicine, and the institution as a whole. We are also fortunate to have Lauren Feld, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Executive for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging in the Department of Medicine, whose work promotes workforce equity through advocacy, research, and institutional initiatives.
The UMass Chan Women in Internal Medicine Group was established to:
- Create a supportive community for women in medicine
- Identify and address professional barriers affecting women physicians and trainees
- Foster mentorship and networking opportunities across all stages of training and career development
- Provide a forum to discuss personal and professional challenges, including fertility, pregnancy, parenting, caregiving, and work-life integration
Committees:
- Career Advancement: Professional development through programming focused on leadership, career growth, negotiation, sponsorship, and self-advocacy
- Work-Life Balance: Hosting events that support physicians in navigating the intersection of their professional and personal lives through discussions and resources on topics such as parenting, caregiving, family responsibilities, and work-life balance
- Wellness: Developing initiatives that promote physical, emotional, and professional well-being for residents, fellows, and faculty

About Us:
Elizabeth Murphy, MD, FACP
Dr. Murphy is the UMass Chan Primary Care Track program director. She received her MD at Boston University School of Medicine, came to UMass Chan in 1995 for her internship, and has not left! Throughout her years at UMass Chan, Dr. Murphy has felt extremely supported in her personal and career goals. The Internal Medicine Residency and the Department of Medicine provided her with many opportunities to achieve her academic and professional interests while giving her the flexibility to be an involved mother to her two sons, who are now adults. With the creation of the Women in Internal Medicine Group, Dr. Murphy is excited to have a place to share her experiences of being a woman in medicine with trainees and junior faculty and pay back the support she has been fortunate to receive throughout her career. She can be contacted at elizabeth.murphy@umassmemorial.org.
Cindy Le, MD
Dr. Le is a Chief Resident at UMass Chan. She studied medicine at UMass Chan Medical School and ultimately stayed here for residency as she fell in love with the program and the people in it! She has had amazing mentors who have guided her through medicine as well as what it means to be a woman in medicine, and she hopes to bring this to others as well. She has been grateful to be part of the WIM leadership for the last 3 years!
Alyssa Singer, MD
Dr. Singer is a third-year Internal Medicine Resident at UMass Chan. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, she earned her MD from Tulane University School of Medicine in 2024. She has a special interest in women’s health and is very involved in research focusing on women of childbearing age and cardiac disease. She loves being a part of the Women in Medicine Group, where she can help foster a supportive, empowering environment. Dr. Singer is especially committed to mentoring trainees as they explore their interests and build meaningful, fulfilling careers in medicine.
Darya Herscovici, MD
Dr. Herscovici is a third-year Internal Medicine Resident at UMass Chan. She received her MD at UMass Chan Medical School in 2024 and stayed on for her Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Herscovici was empowered by the tight-knit community of accomplished female physicians at UMass - women successfully balancing clinical work, research, and their families while mentoring the next generation. She is thrilled to be contributing to and learning from this inspiring community.
Sarah Becker, MD
Dr. Becker is a third-year Internal Medicine Resident at UMass Chan. She was born at UMass, grew up in the Worcester area, received her MD at UMass Chan Medical School in 2024, and stayed on for her Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Becker found incredible support from numerous female physician mentors and colleagues during her time at UMass. With the experience of starting a family during medical training, Dr. Becker is especially excited to work to contribute to this tight-knit community and support other female physicians in their professional and personal journeys.
Lindsey Parent, DO
Dr. Parent is a third-year Internal Medicine Resident at UMass Chan. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Framingham State University and earned her medical degree from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Middletown, NY. She was inspired to join women in medicine by all of the hardworking women in her life, especially those in male-dominated fields.
Marin Lloyd, MD
Dr. Lloyd is a second-year Internal Medicine Resident at UMass Chan. She grew up in Duxbury, MA (on the South Shore) and went to the University of Virginia (go Hoos!) for undergrad before returning to MA for medical school. She graduated from UMass Chan in 2025 and was thrilled to stay here for residency. She is excited to be part of Women in Medicine because she values the opportunity to connect with and learn from other women physicians. She appreciates having a supportive community where we can share experiences, celebrate successes, navigate challenges together, and encourage one another throughout our careers.
Kai-Lou Yue, MD
Dr. Yue is a second-year Internal Medicine Resident at UMass Chan. She earned her MD from UMass Chan Medical School in 2025 and was lucky enough to stay for residency! Throughout her time at UMass, she has had the opportunity to learn from inspiring colleagues and faculty members who have supported her growth as both a physician and a woman in medicine. She also enjoys research focused on women’s health. Dr. Yue is very excited to be a part of the Women in Medicine leadership team, where she hopes to foster the same sense of mentorship and support that has shaped her own journey in medicine.
