A Letter From Our Program Director
For the past 50 years, our Internal Medicine Residency Program has been training highly qualified and successful physicians, preparing them to excel in primary care, hospital medicine, and subspecialty fellowships. Our goal is simple: to provide the best clinical training in the most supportive environment possible. We strive to provide the perfect balance between autonomy and supervision, as well as between education and workload. Our commitment to seeking and incorporating feedback from our residents, in addition to a continuous process of self-improvement, has allowed us to build one of the top clinical Internal Medicine Residency programs in the country.
Our program is highly competitive, containing 128 residents (100 Categorical, 12 Primary Care, 16 Preliminary). As a tertiary, university-based medical center with 781 beds, UMass Memorial Medical Center is the largest safety net hospital in the state of Massachusetts. Our residents routinely manage a wide diversity of patients where over 20% are foreign-born, and over 20% are living below the poverty line. Our residents directly manage many complex medical conditions including liver, renal, and bone marrow/CAR T-cell transplant patients, advanced heart failure including LVAD and ECMO patients, and MICU patients with some of the highest acuity in the country. Our urban and community hospital rotations complement time at the University hospital by providing residents with additional patient populations as well as excellent educators and mentors across the spectrum of care. The resident ambulatory experience, which includes our on-campus outpatient VA clinic, is similarly diverse and allows our trainees to develop long-term relationships with both patients and faculty. The combination of our diverse and complex patient population, the perfect balance of autonomy and supervision, highly engaged mentors, our many opportunities in research, medical education, and quality improvement, and exposure to all aspects of Internal Medicine prepare our graduates to be exceptional fellows, hospitalists, and primary care providers. This in turn has led to our outstanding fellowship match rates at the most competitive programs nationally and in the most competitive fields.
Our residents can join our Research Track, our Medical Education Track, our Primary Care Track, and now, our new Physician Scientist Training Program. With our switch to a 3+1+1 schedule, our residents can participate in advanced subspecialty clinics such as IBD clinic, HIV Clinic, and Renal Transplant Clinic, just to name a few. With the new schedule, residents have additional time to engage in research, medical education, and quality improvement as well as less common electives such as Informatics and Hospital Administration. Finally, our schedule significantly improves wellness and quality of life with 2 out of 5 weekends off, inpatient rotations lasting 3 weeks instead of 4, and never having to do 24-hour shifts.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our program this year, we will continue our efforts to be at the forefront of Internal Medicine training. Thank you for visiting our website. If you would like to become part of our residency family and experience one of the most diverse, well-rounded, and clinically outstanding residency programs, I encourage you to apply.
Sincerely,
