Chiefs' Welcome

Welcome to the UMass Anesthesiology Residency program here in Worcester, MA. We appreciate your interest in our program and would love to have you join our family at UMass Chan Medical School. We believe our categorical program offers you unique experiences, ample case volume, and a supportive community to help you become a competent and confident anesthesiologist.

Your anesthesia training at UMass will consist of a Clinical Base Year (CBY) followed by three Clinical Anesthesia years (CA-1 through CA-3). During your CBY, you will rotate through a combination of medicine and surgery rotations, including cardiology and pulmonology wards and vascular, trauma, and colorectal surgery. In addition, you will spend time rotating through the Emergency Department and the Surgical ICU. Elective rotations of ENT, transfusion medicine, palliative care, addiction psychiatry, and our anesthesia acute pain service will add balance to your clinical base year. A notable strength of our program is the bootcamp period from June to August during CA-1 year, where residents transition to anesthesia training by working directly with senior residents and attendings to build a foundation for the remainder of residency.

Another highlight of our program is the diverse clinical exposure our residents receive during their CA-1 through CA-3 years. We are a medium-sized program with 11 residents per class and our residents well-exceed required case numbers and receive early training in complex cases. Moreover, our clinical training is reinforced with faculty lectures, board review sessions, and simulation labs during our protected four-hour didactics period on Wednesday mornings.

We are very fortunate to have amazing faculty who are dedicated to teaching and truly love working with our residents. Our attendings bring their knowledge and expertise in various subspecialties to help us strengthen our clinical skill sets, deepen our knowledge base, and provide the support we need to reach our goals post-residency.

As you begin your application process, we strongly encourage you to consider our program and contact us with any questions you may have along the way. We wish you the very best with your application and interview process.

Best wishes,

Julia Waldman, Abhinav Prasad, & Malavika Chandrashekar
