Inpatient Service
UMass Memorial HealthAlliance–Clinton Hospital is a medium-sized community hospital and home to our Family Medicine Residency’s only inpatient teaching service. As the sole residency program in the hospital, our residents enjoy an unopposed, high-impact learning environment that fosters close collaboration and strong interprofessional relationships.
The Family Medicine Inpatient Service (FMIS) admits adult medical patients from both our residency continuity clinic and several community-based family physicians—including patients requiring care in the Critical Care Unit. Residents and students work as part of a dynamic, team-based model with robust support from our dedicated academic hospitalist faculty.
A Progressive, Hands-On Learning Experience
- First-year residents quickly come to view the FMIS as a home base. They develop strong inpatient care and management skills under close supervision from faculty and senior residents.
- Second- and third-year residents take on 24/7 service coverage, expanding their scope to include support for the Maternity Unit and participation in Rapid Response Teams.
- Residents are challenged by a wide variety of acute medical conditions and progressively build their confidence in clinical decision-making, team leadership, and supervision of learners.
Throughout training, residents are mentored by experienced family physicians who serve as full-time academic hospitalists—providing exceptional guidance, high-yield teaching, and modeling compassionate, comprehensive inpatient care.
