Our Residency's Mission

Our goal is simple but bold: to train compassionate, forward-thinking, and highly skilled Family Medicine physicians ready to lead in any setting—from rural communities to urban centers, from academic medicine to global health.

We’d love to get to know you. If you’re passionate about full-spectrum, inclusive, community-rooted care, we invite you to explore further and consider joining us.

What Makes Us Exceptional?

  • Integrated Behavioral Health, Nationally Recognized:

The UMass Chan Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is a national leader in behavioral health integration. Our on-site team of Psychologists and a Psychiatrist works directly with residents to enhance patient care and clinical education. This model improves access to mental health services, promotes whole-person wellness, and reduces stigma—preparing you to deliver truly comprehensive care.

    Early Leader in MAT Training:
We were among the first programs to incorporate Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) training into our residency. Today, MAT remains a vital and actively taught component of our clinical education.

  • Inclusive, Affirming LGBTQ+ Care:
We have expanded our clinical competencies and curriculum to ensure best practices for caring for trans and gender-diverse patients. Our goal is to train residents who are fully prepared to offer inclusive, affirming care—including both medical and non-medical gender affirmation—in any setting.

  • Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) Integrated into Daily Practice:
Our program is unique in its full integration of OMT into routine resident clinic days. This allows residents to apply their osteopathic training as part of their family medicine care—even when patients aren’t seeking OMT specifically—making osteopathic principles a natural, consistent part of their clinical approach.

  • Obesity Medicine as Primary Care:
We actively integrate evidence-based treatment of obesity into our primary care services, recognizing it as a complex and chronic disease. Our approach has strong synergy with our Lifestyle Medicine curriculum, encompassing nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress management. This overlap allows us to provide truly comprehensive care for patients living with obesity—and to make a meaningful difference in their long-term health and well-being.

  • Dual Board Certification in Lifestyle Medicine:
We are proud to offer a Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (LMRC), providing residents the opportunity to become board certified in Lifestyle Medicine in addition to Family Medicine. This evidence-based, whole-person specialty focuses on treating—and often reversing—chronic disease through prescriptive lifestyle change. It’s one more way we equip our residents to deliver forward-thinking, preventive care.
