Responding to Concerns of Discrimination, Bias, and Mistreatment
UMass Chan is committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and equitable learning and working environment. Although we strive for a positive climate, concerns may arise that require review under the Appropriate Treatment of Learners (ATL) policy, Discrimination policy, or Title IX. Reports related to perceived bias in the curriculum (formerly submitted through DRIVE) should now be submitted under ATL unless they clearly fall within Discrimination or Title IX.
All concerns submitted through our secure online system (Maxient) are handled confidentially and reviewed according to the steps below.
What Happens When a Concern Is Reported
- Report Submission
Reports are submitted through our confidential online reporting platform. Individuals may choose to provide their name or remain anonymous, though anonymous reports may limit our ability to follow up or intervene.
- Initial Review
The responsible administrator reviews each report and determines the appropriate category:
- Title IX concerns
- Learning environment / mistreatment concerns
- Discrimination or bias concerns
- DRIVE report concerns
- Safety Assessment
We assess whether the situation presents any immediate safety risks. When necessary, the administrator collaborates with campus partners to implement interim measures to support the well-being of those involved.
4a. If the Reporter Provided Their Name
- You will be contacted within two business days
- Gather additional information
- Provide support, resources, and guidance
- Explain relevant policies and next steps
- Offer informal resolution options (education, consultation, mediation, restorative approaches, etc.) or formal grievance procedures, when appropriate
The case is closed after any agreed-upon actions are completed.
4b. If the Reporter Is Anonymous
We assess whether the concern allows for responsible follow-up:
- If actionable and safe to address – We intervene.
- If not actionable – We document the concern and close the case.
