Chiefs' Welcome

Welcome to the webpage of the UMass Chan Psychiatry Residency Program! I’m excited to offer a glimpse into the compassion and dedication that make our program special. Here, there is a strong emphasis on community and mentorship, not only amongst residents but also between residents and faculty. From our buddy system, which pairs junior and senior residents, to collaboration efforts on didactics and scholarly projects, there are ample opportunities to form meaningful connections that foster both personal and professional growth.

UMass is the largest academic medical center and safety net hospital in Central Massachusetts. We are based in Worcester, a culturally rich and diverse city where nearly one-quarter of residents are foreign-born. While our main campus serves as our home base, we also rotate through several affiliated hospitals in the region, giving us exposure to a wide range of patient populations and clinical settings. This variety ensures a comprehensive and well-rounded training experience that sets up our graduates for success in their future careers.

Education is a cornerstone of our residency. Each week, we have a full day of protected didactics, where we present challenging or interesting cases, explore various clinical topics, and reflect on our experiences. In both inpatient and outpatient settings, faculty are supportive and dedicated to prioritizing resident learning while encouraging us to pursue our individual interests and goals. This commitment to education extends to our program leadership, who value resident feedback and welcome new ideas to help strengthen and evolve the program.

My fellow residents and our supervisors are truly the heart of this program. I invite you to visit our “Meet the Residents” and “Meet the Training Staff” pages to get to know the incredible people who make UMass such a welcoming place to train.

Please keep us in mind as you navigate the application process. I am always happy to connect, so feel free to reach out with any questions!
