Vista Discovery Retests, Remediation, Progression, and Withdrawal

Focused Retests

  • If a student fails a discovery block, they will be offered a focused retest on Monday following the WIN time only if they meet ALL of the following criteria:
    • Score on the block final exam is within 2 standard deviation of the mean (SDM)
    • Score on the block NBME exam is within 2 SDM
    • Final block grade is within 2 SDM

  • If the student passes the focused retest, they will receive credit for the block

  • If the student fails the focused retest, they will carry an incomplete for the block and will be scheduled for a full retest.

  • If a student qualifies for a focused retest, they will need to attend a mandatory remediation session (live in person) on Wednesday of the WIN time.

Full Retests

  • If a student fails a focused retest or does not qualify for a focused retest, they will be scheduled for a full retest.

  • Passing a full retest will obtain credit (CR) for the block.

  • Failing a full retest will obtain an NCR (no credit) for the block. The student will need to retake the course in the following offering. Student will be referred to BSAEB and an individualized academic plan will be created.

  • A student can carry a maximum of 2 full retests during discovery phase. Accumulating 3 full retests will need to pause in the curriculum. They will be withdrawn from these blocks and will need to retake these blocks the following offering. The detailed deceleration plan will be determined by the academic evaluation board.

  • If, in addition to 2 full retests, a student accumulates any incomplete in discovery courses, they will need to pause in the curriculum and the AEB will determine further progression of the student.

  • For full retests of first year blocks, these will be offered during summer. Students may be allowed up to 2 full retests during summer (provided there are no additional incomplete courses). BSAEB reserves the right to determine a student’s progression based on their overall academic performance.

  • Students will need to complete P1, P2, and BII blocks to progress to year 2. Other incomplete first year blocks could be completed upon completion of the rest of the discovery curriculum, , as allowed by limits mentioned within the policy.

  • For full retests of 2nd year blocks, these will be offered during the step 1 reading period. Students may be allowed up to 2 full retests during this period (provided there are no additional incomplete courses). BSAEB reserves the right to determine a student’s progression based on their overall academic performance.

Withdrawal

Students could withdraw from a course 24 hours prior to their block final exam, or focused retest, or full retest.

Progression

Students will need to complete the discovery curriculum to progress to explorations phase.
