Vandana Nagpal and Benjamin Tanenbaum Work to Enhance Well-Being of Internal Medicine Residents with Longitudinal Wellness Program
As residency training can often lead to burnout, Vandana Nagpal, MD, associate division chief and associate professor of medicine in the Division of Palliative Care, and Benjamin Tanenbaum, MD, a current chief resident in the Internal Medicine Residency, launched a longitudinal wellness program aimed at improving residents’ well-being. Published in the Journal of Wellness, the study describes a series of multi-pronged interventions, including quarterly group sessions with health psychologists, bi-annual self-checks, peer buddy support for first-year students, weekly 5-minute reflection sessions, and volunteer dog visits. These initiatives were well-received by residents and shown to have a significant positive impact on resident wellness.
