Favour Akabogu Studies Rare Forms of Sarcoma in Hemming Lab
In a recent student spotlight published by UMass Chan News, PhD candidate Favour Akabogu is working alongside Matthew Hemming, MD, PhD, medical oncologist, physician-scientist, and assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, on developing new therapies for a rare type of sarcoma called gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a tumor that develops throughout the gastrointestinal tract. In the Hemming lab, Favour focuses her studies on GISTs, which are known to respond only to one form of therapy and will eventually develop resistance.
“Favour brings a lot of energy and insight, and her world experience and views really enrich the lab environment,” said Dr. Hemming. “She’s a hard worker, is passionate about her work, and has a very bright future ahead of her.”
