Although certain medical specialties remain popular, geriatric medicine attracts less interest from future physicians. With limited enthusiasm for the field among trainees, Jerry H. Gurwitz, MD, the Dr. John Meyers Professor of Primary Care Medicine, and professor of medicine in the Divisions of Geriatric Medicine and Health Systems Science, believes that healthcare systems could become overwhelmed over the next decade. According to the article, the supply of doctors trained specifically to treat older adults is nowhere near keeping pace with the US population. Dr. Gurwitz believes there is no clear path to address the shortage, which could lead to a quality-of-care crisis.
