4-week blocks of rotations in CT and MRI providing in-depth exposure to various aspects of diagnostic neuroimaging (9.5 months)

Neurointerventional Radiology rotation
6 weeks of neurointerventional radiology rotation performing diagnostic as well as therapeutic procedures.

Rotation at Boston Children's Hospital for additional pediatric neuroradiology experience
2 weeks

PET-CT rotation
2 weeks

Call responsibility
The in-house call includes 13 weekends/year (typically 8 AM to 5 PM).
No overnight calls.

Academic time
24 days per year.  Fellows may consolidate some of their academic time into blocks for specific projects.

Various interdepartmental, as well as divisional conferences are held almost every day of the week and fellows are expected to conduct these conferences under the guidance of neuroradiology faculty.

• Head and neck tumor board two Mondays of the month
• Neurosurgery-neuroradiology conference every Tuesday.

• Pediatric neurology-neuroradiology conference one Tuesday of the month
• Neuro tumor board two Wednesdays of the month
• Neuroradiology case conference every Wednesday

• Neuroradiology fellow didactic lecture conference two Thursdays of the month
• Endocrinology conference one Friday of the month
• Epilepsy conference, one or two Fridays of the month
• 8 to 10 journal clubs in a year

Radiology resident teaching conferences are held every day throughout the year and fellows are welcome to attend these conferences, as service duties allow. Neuroradiology-specific resident conferences are held two to three times per month. Fellows are expected to prepare and present at least two conferences for the radiology residents during their fellowship.

Radiology Grand Rounds are held throughout the year with prestigious visiting and local clinical/research leaders, offering fellows the opportunity to meet and learn from leading national authorities on a wide variety of topics.

The primary location for the Neuroradiology fellowship is the UMass Memorial Medical Center at the University campus. The fellows are at the University Campus for almost all the fellowship. They read some of the neuroimaging studies performed at other hospitals of UMass Memorial Health Care, from the University Campus.

• UMass Memorial Medical Center University Campus is located on Lake Avenue North and is home to the UMass Chan Medical School and its research facilities. UMass Memorial’s trauma center stroke services are located on this campus and provide a large volume of neuroimaging cases. The University Campus is the primary site of all neurointerventional radiology services.
• UMass Memorial Medical Center Memorial Campus is located a mile from the main University Campus. It houses neonatology services.
• UMass Memorial Medical Imaging Center (UMMIC) is an outpatient MRI center located on Shrewsbury Street just minutes from University and Memorial Campuses. It houses one 3T and two 1.5T MR systems. PET-CT is also performed at this site and interpreted by the Nuclear Medicine Division.
• The community sites include:

  • UMass Memorial Health – HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital
  • UMass Memorial Health – Marlborough Hospital

Scanners

• 9 CT scanners including one 128 slice Siemens dual energy CT.
• 9 clinical MR systems
• 1 PET/CT
• 2 state-of-the art neurointerventional Philips biplane machines

Annual imaging volume

• Nearly 1 million radiology imaging studies a year.
• 80,000 diagnostic neuroimaging studies.
• Each fellow performs approximately 30-50 angiograms and 50-60 lumbar puncture/myelograms.

Fellows are encouraged to participate in current research projects or initiate projects under the supervision of the faculty. There are many opportunities to get involved in basic science and translational research as well. Academic time is provided throughout the year for the fellow to work on research interests. Fellows are expected to have completed one manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and at least one abstract in a societal annual conference by the end of the year.

Radiology Fellowship Match | NRMP

Requirements:

By the time they begin their fellowship at UMass Chan Medical School, applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited radiology residency program, an AOA-approved residency program, a program with ACGME International (ACGME-I) Advanced Specialty Accreditation, or a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)-accredited or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)-accredited residency program located in Canada. An exceptionally qualified international graduate who is trained in a non-ACGME radiology residency program is also considered for the fellowship.  Acceptance is contingent on obtaining Massachusetts medical license by the start date of the Fellowship.
