The Emergency Radiology fellowship program offers trainees an in-depth, comprehensive experience with exposure to modern emergency radiology practice.  The goals of fellowship comprise education, patient care, quality/process improvement and scholarly activity components.

The clinical training enables fellows to accumulate a broad knowledge base, develop interpretative skills, and improve decision-making/consultation skills. Fellows will have the opportunity to develop, under supervision, independent skills for the oversight and interpretation of multimodality emergency radiologic imaging studies.

The fellowship program trains fellows to interact with emergency medicine, trauma surgery and other specialty referring physicians in a consultative role. This is accomplished during daily clinical duties in person at the UMMMC University campus, and remotely, at 4 additional emergency departments in the system. Fellows are an integral part of all interdepartmental conferences, including clinical, patient care-related, process improvement and education conferences. Fellows are exposed to and participate in ongoing radiology quality and process improvement, educational and research projects within the section.

At the conclusion of the fellowship, fellows should be capable of independent and accurate clinical decision-making in all areas of Emergency Radiology.

The Emergency Radiology division is staffed by fourteen, fellowship-trained radiologists who are committed to graduate medical education. Emergency radiology fellows are vital members of the division, participating in daily patient care and facilitating the oversight, interpretation, and timely reporting of emergency imaging studies. Fellows will also be an essential member in the teaching of medical students, radiology residents and other trainees.

Daily clinical case review sessions are held with ED radiology faculty as a 1:1 session. Didactic teaching of fellows is provided at daily departmental noon conferences, weekly divisional didactic/interesting case conference, Peer Learning conferences every other month, quarterly quality process improvement conferences, and research meetings. Dedicated time is given to fellows for elective rotations with other UMMMC radiology subspecialty divisions. Fellows have several opportunities to participate in teaching activities for UMass Chan medical students and radiology residents.

Fellows are encouraged to initiate their own research projects with full support from faculty members, or to select projects from several ongoing in the division. Fellows are given dedicated, scheduled academic time and office space. They are expected to submit at least one abstract or original manuscript during their training year.

Fellows are physically located at the University Campus Emergency Radiology division reading room. Emergency radiology studies are also performed at four additional Emergency Departments and interpreted remotely from the University Campus.

Locations

University Campus is located on Lake Avenue and is home to a 781 bed tertiary care hospital, the sole teaching hospital for the UMass Chan Medical School. UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) is Worcester county’s only Level I trauma center, primary stroke center and largest tertiary referral center for central New England.

Memorial Campus is the sister campus located a mile from the main University Campus. It houses a stand alone Emergency Department, OBGYN, NICU, orthopedic and other specialty services.

UMass Memorial – Marlborough Hospital is a community hospital located in Marlborough, MA, a few miles east of our UMMMC campuses. The hospital houses an emergency department with a full complement of emergency imaging services, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, radiography, nuclear medicine.

UMass Memorial – Clinton Hospital is a community hospital located in Clinton, MA, a few miles northeast of our UMMMC campuses. Emergency imaging services include CT, ultrasound and radiography.

UMass Memorial Health Alliance – Leominster Hospital is a community hospital located in Leominster, MA, several miles north of our UMMMC campuses. This hospital also houses an emergency department with a full complement of emergency imaging services, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, radiography, nuclear medicine.

Requirements:
Applicants must have completed a radiology residency program accredited by the ACGME by the time they begin their fellowship at UMMMC. Applicants must be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent. Acceptance is contingent on obtaining an unrestricted Massachusetts medical license by start date of Fellowship.
