Conferences
Conferences provide a structured learning experience, and along with the opportunity to review relevant topics in-depth, fellows also learn how to present effectively. Weekly conferences are held on Wednesdays, 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., and Thursdays, 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (with occasional additional sessions based on presenter availability). Beyond the UMass Chan GI conferences, fellows are also welcome to attend Internal Medicine Morning Reports and noon conferences, Department of Medicine Medical Grand Rounds, weekly multi-disciplinary GI Tumor Board, and various liver transplant-based meetings.
Summer Series
GI faculty and guest lecturers present on topics that are high yield for management of common and/or serious gastrointestinal, hepatic, and/or pancreaticobiliary pathologies seen in the inpatient and outpatient setting, with an eye towards institutional and department algorithms. These lectures are delivered annually and updated based on evolving guidelines and practice management.
Faculty Lectures
All UMass Chan GI faculty are invited to give a lecture or lead a discussion/workshop on an area of clinical or research interest. The format can vary from topic-based didactics to case-based discussions, to review of endoscopy videos, to animal labs – all based on the interests and expertise of our attendings. Visiting faculty are scheduled to deliver lectures to the division throughout the year, as are non-GI UMass Chan faculty, based on the relevance of the topic.
Fellows Lectures
Each fellow is responsible for multiple presentations every year, delivered to the entire division. The format includes journal clubs, review of guidelines, video-based endoscopy lectures, morbidity and mortality peer-reviewed conferences, and GI board review. All fellows can expect to present during the annual GI Fellows’ Academic Debate, a 2-hour conference held in January. Fellows can also expect to present on any elective experience they have arranged during their training. The academic year ends with third-year fellows delivering a Senior Grand Rounds on a topic based on their clinical or research interests.
Dr. Dominic Nompleggi Annual Lecture Series
Dr. Nompleggi joined the GI division at UMass Chan in 1991 and served as division chief from 2004 to 2021. Started in honor of his leadership and strong support of fellows’ training, the annual Nompleggi Lecture gives fellows an opportunity to invite, interact with, and learn from a distinguished leader in the field of GI. Held in the spring, the event brings together clinicians from UMass Chan and the local community for a lecture, reception, and networking. The visiting guest spends time with the fellows earlier in the day, reviewing cases and providing career development advice.
Annual UMass Chan GI Research Day
Held in May, during the course of a day, the division sponsors a series of presentations and a poster session highlighting research efforts by members of the UMass Chan GI community, along with the efforts of investigators in the larger UMass Chan community whose research is related to GI. Oral presentations and posters are primarily delivered by trainees, providing the opportunity for feedback from colleagues and faculty across campus. All GI fellows are required to have posters showing updates on their scholarly activities. A fellow may be selected for an oral presentation, depending on the project and the progress made.
