Areas of Distinction

Areas of Distinction is a unique initiative designed to individualize the training experience for each fellow, utilizing resources available within the division, department, institution, and community. We have developed internal training tracks, each with a set of required supplemental experiences, which will augment each trainee’s experience in the fellowship, making it more organized, fulfilling, and career-oriented.

Fellows select an Area of Distinction toward the end of their first year. Each fellow meets with the program director to review the set of expectations and plan out the upcoming academic year. Senior fellows are assigned weeks during the year, designated as ‘Track’, during which certain requirements can be fulfilled. Prior to the third year of training, the fellow is invited to provide feedback and input, which is used to finalize an individualized schedule.  Each fellow is required to choose and fulfill the requirements for one of these internal training tracks. At the completion of the fellowship, an additional certificate, indicating expertise in his/her chosen Area of Distinction, is presented to the fellow at the time of graduation.

The Areas of Distinction include:

  • General Gastroenterology
  • Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
  • Liver Diseases
  • Advanced Therapeutics
  • Medical Education
  • Healthcare Equity and Community Outreach
  • Quality Improvement and Patient Safety
  • Basic Science and Translational Research
  • Practice Management and Leadership
