    Dr. Chan received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology in 1991 from the University of California, San Diego (Summa Cum Laude) where he received the Provost’s Scholarship Award as the top graduate of his class.  He then went to the University of California, Berkeley to pursue his PhD study in Immunology in the Department of Molecular & Cell Biology.  After his PhD study with Astar Winoto at Berkeley in 1997, he joined the laboratory of Michael Lenardo at the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) where he first developed an interest in TNF biology and cell death regulation.  He joined the faculty of UMass in 2002.  He is currently Professor of Pathology and the Chair of the Immunology and Microbiology Graduate Program.  He was formerly a Miriam Benedict Wolf fellow of the Cancer Research Institute (New York), an investigator of the Cancer Research Institute (New York), Smith Family Foundation, and a senior scholar of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
